Historic Project Successes

One of the Largest Battery Storage Systems Providing Resource Adequacy2019-12-07T04:01:09+00:00
Project Name:
Aliso Canyon

Location:
Pomona, CA

Size:
20 MW + 80 MWh

Customer:
AltaGas

Overview:
In response to the Aliso Canyon gas leak that evacuated thousands of homes and hurt Southern California’s electricity generation capacity, investor owned utilities and regulators launched a first-ever emergency procurement strategy to quickly add capacity for resource adequacy (RA) by leveraging fast-responding energy storage. AltaGas + Greensmith won the project.

Distinction:
2018 Engineering Excellence Competition Winner – American Council of Engineering Companies, 2017 System of the Year – GridEdge Awards, (Currently the largest indoor battery facility at 12,500 square feet)

Impact:
Averted brown-outs/blackouts by immediately shoring up capacity and reliability by integrating over 12,000 batteries into an existing gas plant in the LA basin. Capable of delivering 80 MWh continuously for 4 hours – enough to power 15,000 homes.

Successes:
Fastest system deployment globally at four months from Notice to Proceed to CAISO qualification. Largest energy storage system deployment globally in 2016. Beyond RA, the system owner is using the system and software to capture more value streams in California through multiple applications including day ahead and 5 minute energy markets
